In Home Session Guide
what to expect, how to prepare, styling, and more... All in one place
Hi, friend! I am so honored that you've chosen me to be your photographer and that you're opening your home to me. Thank you!
This guide is to help you and your family be ready and equipped for an amazing session! As always, reach out with any questions, for help with styling, etc., I love getting to talk with you!
How To Prepare
Complete your questionnaire
I am not here to tell my own story about who I think your family is. I want to get to know your family. The answers you provide in your questionnaire help me to know what will be unique and meaningful as I tell your family's story.
Choose your Outfits
In a little bit, I will give some guidelines for choosing outfits - We want to lean into neutrals and muted colors. Think, "relaxed but elevated" Avoid bright colors, lots of patterns, and graphic t's with cartoons/logos/etc.,
Declutter + Tidy
Don't feel like your home has to be cleaned to perfection, but moving clutter, hiding phone chargers in a drawer, etc., will create a calm and relaxed backdrop for your photos. If you see something that you think, "she can Photoshop this out" it is better to put it away/hide it!
Talk to Your Kids Ahead of Time
Maybe your kids have had photos before, but it is always worth talking through things ahead of time so that they know what to expect.
Here is an example of how to talk about this with your kids:
You can explain how Miss Susannah will have a big camera (if your kids are little, you can make a pretend camera with your hands to demonstrate) and is going to take pictures for you to be able to print and hang on the wall or put in an album. (You can take them around your home to point out photos you already have to make the connection more tangible for littles.)
You can talk about how you're going to have fun, you're going to use good listening ears, you're going to snuggle, and you can even practice "picture smiles" (you can employ that pretend camera with your hands and make it a game for practicing their picture smiles.)
Now - By practicing picture smiles, make sure you don't over emphasize that! I don't actually want them looking at the camera all the time. We just want to help them feel comfortable with the concepts and ready and excited for the experience.
The Experience
- When I arrive, I'll take a little tour of your home to scout out the lighting + best spots for photos (I love getting photos ahead of time as well, so please text or email them!)
- We will turn off all the overhead lights
- We'll get started! I like to orient my sessions around activities that are special to your family during this season. Playing musical instruments, reading stories, playing a game, etc.,
- I may move furniture around, stand on top of furniture, or ask you to sit on your counter. I'll always ask first though!

Let's Talk about Outfits
I strongly encourage you to choose neutral and muted tones for your photos - Browns, tans, creams, whites, even denim - are all amazing neutral options for in home sessions. Small floral prints, large stripes (avoid pin-stripes as those don't tend to look great on camera)
Colors are beautiful, but choose muted tones and consider your home furnishings, wall colors, etc., (I can help you think through all of that if you want to send me photos so I can see!)
Using layers like cozy chunky knit cardigans, lace, etc., are really beautiful for warming things up.
I'll share some examples below!
To make styling easy, you can use the Online Styling Tool that I subscribe to using the code: SUSANNAHRAYEPHOTOGRAPHY
It will let you send me what you are working on and I can send my suggestions as well! It works best on a computer, you can always "edit your questionnaire" to choose other color options after you've looked through the outfits for the first set you've chosen.
Look in your own closet, use Style + Select, and feel free to use my Client Closet!

Styling should feel relaxed, but elevated
